DSTS (Dim Sum and Then Some) is a women’s volleyball team originally created in 2003 to participate in the 59th Annual North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (NACIVT) that was held in New York, NY that year. Our original team members were: Yvonne Chu (co-captain), Sibil Kwok (co-captain), Vickie Wang, Teresa Tran, Lydia Chung, Helen Hua and Mary Gillette. Our coach for 2003 was Buu Cao. It was a time of learning. A time of bonding. A time of bad playing but lots of fun nonetheless. Our record was 1 win and a bunch of losses.
In 2004, for the 60th NACIVT, our team lost a few and gained a few for the Boston, MA. The team for Boston consisted of: Yvonne (co-captain), Sibil Kwok (co-captain), Regina Huang, Kari Sakata, Lorraine Wu, Teresa Tran, Lydia Chung and Helen Hua. Our coaches were Matt Tom and Curtis Lew. In Boston, we stepped up our defense. On our first day, our team went 5-3 and made it to Power Play round for day 2. But during Power Play, we competed against 2 of the toughest teams (ones that ended up being defending champions and playoff teams - Toronto Flying Tigers A and Toronto Phoenix) and didn’t make it to the playoffs. At the finals, our friends from SF AIM took first. 2004 was a great year for all the West Coast womens’ teams participating - Calm Chaos, SF AIM, Happy Cowz, Ai-Ya!, LA Spice and of course, our own DSTS.
In 2005, we gained a whole team! This year’s 61st Annual NACIVT will be held in Toronto, ON. The DSTS team has become a 2-team group. DSTS1 includes: Yvonne Chu (co-captain), Sibil Kwok (co-captain), Kari Sakata, Lorraine Wu, Ellen Hsu, Lydia Chung and Ya-Tin Yang. DSTS2 includes: Vickie Wang (captain), Jenny Wong, Cyndi Hsiao, Bich Ta, Daranee Pramest, Teresa Tran and Soo Feingold. Unfortunately Irene Chiu (out with an injury), Jean Chan and Nancy Okamoto were not able to make it out with us in 2005. Our coaches are: Matt Tom, Curtis Lew and Oscar Mora. Along the way, we acquired some dedicated fans - Alan Sung (”Cheerleader/Water/Towel Boy”) and Felix Lung (our official DSTS photographer and website builder). Our DSTS family has grown to 17 team members, 3 coaches and 2 avid fans. DSTS is looking forward to making great things happen in TO - as well as making some great memories to keep for the future.
Our 2005 performance was our greatest achievement thus far - DSTS 1 made it to the Silver Semi-Finals while DSTS 2 made it to the Gold Quarter Finals. Fantastic job, guys!!
2006 was a year a rebuilding - new teams formed from the 2 created in 2005 and it looks like the West Coast will be making its presence known at the 62nd NACIVT in Washington DC. There are approximately 7 Womens and 2 Mens teams coming from the So Cal area alone. This year’s team make up consists of Coach Trung Pham, Mary Lee, Jacqueline Yee, Jenny Cinco, Song Cho, Susy Ybanez, Lydia Chung, YaTin Yang, Sibil Kwok and Yvonne Chu. 2006 looks to be a great year for DSTS!
